As a Malaysian, I find it amazing as we share and learn to understand each other’s festivals and cultures. The Mid Autumn Festival is one of those festivals celebrated by all Malaysians. Nevertheless, Malaysians have never forgotten the origin of the Mid Autumn Festivals and celebrated with all kind of activities and delicacies.
The Mid Autumn Festival commemorates an uprising in China against the Monggol rulers of the Yuan Dynasty in 14th century. Inside each mooncake was inserted a piece of paper with a message “kill the Monggols on the 15th day of the 8th Month”. The Chinese did it secretly as group gathering was banned and it was impossible to make plans for a rebellion.
Among the activities that are celebrated such as lantern parade, mooncake eating competition, the making of lantern using recyclable materials, solving Chinese Riddle and many more. These activities are so enjoyable regardless of the age group. The children show off their colourful lantern of all sizes and shapes while the adult keep themselves busy with solving the riddles under the lanterns.
It is not a celebration if it’s without food. The delicacies such as water chestnuts, yam cake, pomelos, are among those must have. The Chinese will carry out the usual virtual of paying respect to their ancestor in an open-door gathering at yard. They cherish the moment of being together.
Although modernization has a great impact on our culture, tradition but the spirit of the mid-autumn celebration has never faded. It’s not only a festival to celebrate but an opportunity for the reunion of the family members.
